Pull on the Castelli Men’s Insolito Radiation Cycling Jacket, and get three-season versatility that prepares you for any cycling conditions. This interchangeable jacket features a Gore Windstopper X-Lite shell that blocks wind and resists sleet, snow, and rain. Castelli backed the shell with a heat-reflecting Radiation under layer (akin to a space blanket) that zips in and out of the top layer for low-profile insulation on cold riding days. The Insolito also features a zip-off hood and sleeves that turn the jacket into a vest on milder days. Perforations in the Radiation layer keep the jacket breathable, and it retains 80% of body heat that normally gets lost.
Bottom Line: Block the wind and harness your heat in this jacket.
Went on a ride for an hour and half with only a long sleeve base layer under the jacket and the "Radiation under layer". The jacket stopped the wind superbly, and I the jacket provided the perfect temperature (not too warm, nor colt). The little hood kept my ears cozy, and never cold. Everyone else I saw that day on bikes were wearing bulkier jackets, but I was just fine with my "thin" jacket. Took another ride at 40f with the jacket without the "Radiation under layer" and the same base layer. After an hour, and some climbing, I felt just a tad warm. The small zippers in the front were enough to cool me down.
First ride with jacket was with 30 degrees, 15-25 mph North wind. Had to open a vent after a few miles. Wore a long sleeve baselayer beneath jacket. The outer shell really is good at stopping the wind. I am 5ft. 7 in., 160 lbs and got this in Large. Fit is nice. I seen a review on Wired.com last fall for this jacket, but at initial pricepoint, there was no way I was going to get it. Last week when it came up on Bonktown, I couldn't believe my eyes! Keep up the good work, guys! I've been able to build my cycling wardrobe with your help!
Hi there, Is the Insolito Radiation Jacket available in a medium size? Also, does anyone know how that jacket compares to the new Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Barrier WxB Jacket?
I wore this jacket and a long sleeve base layer on a cold 25f ride with sustained winds of 24mph out of the north. I rode in the canyon. At the bottom of the canyon it was drizzling, half way up it was sleeting, and at the top it was snowing. I wore the jacket with bib tights.
Review: The jacket kept me dry at all times. Drizzle, sleet and snow did not penetrate the jackets barrier. AWESOME!
The jacket kept my core nice and toasty without over heating and sweating. When the sleet would collect on my arms, it was cold, but when I noticed it I wiped the ice off. I did this quite a bit on the ride. Snow was no problem. Neither was the rain. It fit snug and was not bulky. This jacket kept out the wind and whipped it around me. Nice aerodynamics.
Style: The style looks great. Very clean and sleek looking. Can be worn in a store without people thinking you look like an alien. I was the envy of all the club members when I debuted the jacket. SAWEEEET!! Very good looking jacket (that is what is important right?)
Negatives: No negatives besides the price, but when you are cold on a bike and still want to look good, the jacket is priceless. The fit was great except I have a large chest and back (weight lifting) in which the jacket fit tight. This will be no problem unless I have to wear a wool base layer too.
Bottom line: AWESOME jacket. Worth every penny. Does what it says it does and looks good too!
Micheal I hate to be the one to break this to you but Castelli no longer makes the Insolito Jacket in Yellow. The only jacket Castelli makes for 09 in yellow is a Rain Jacket.

I live in Minnesota and have had my Castelli Insolito Radiation Jacket since August 2009. I have worn it throughout the winter while commuting back and forth to work 20 miles/day down to -15° F plus a brutal wind-chill. This jacket out preformed well beyond my expectations. The heat-reflecting Radiation under layer performs very well when it gets cold outside. When it starts getting warmer out you will be unzipping it out of the jacket. For winter riding I was wearing a Craft Cool Mesh Sleeveless Base Layer, Icebreaker Sport 320 long sleeve merino top or a Craft Pro ZERO Zip Mock Neck long sleeve shirt. These worked extremely well through the coldest winter, 15° F to -15° F. Above 15° F I layered differently. A Craft Cool Mesh Sleeveless Base Layer with Smartwool long sleeve or short sleeve cycling jerseys. This has been a great fall and winter jacket even in an extreme downpour during my whole ride to work. I stayed dry. The vents work great. Just be careful when leaving them open when it is raining. The whole inside of my jacket got soaked. Even my gloves filled with water when I left the vents open. It all dried out quickly. The sleeves zip off creating a very nice vest. I used the hood over my Rapha Winter Hat. These were a great combo for cold winter riding.
For me this has been the prefect fall winter cycling jacket. Warm when needed. Cool when needed. Dry when needed. I'm looking forward to next fall and winter commuting.
Im 5-8 tall 152 lbs 39 chest, 35 waste. Large jacket. Mine is the, Boy is it Bright, highly visible yellow. $325 Backcountry.com through Amazon.
