Imagine being able to ride in cold weather with clothing that emulated all the best features of your summer-weight kit: bibs that didn’t restrict breathing, a chamois as good as the one in your best shorts, and lightweight materials that didn't feel bulky or restrictive. The Castelli Sorpasso Bib Tights are part of Castelli’s Rosso Corsa line of products, and as a result, they get the Italian manufacturer’s very best treatment in materials, design, and fit.
The Sorpasso Bib Tights begin with Castelli’s top-of-the-line Progetto X2 pad, the same pad found in their best shorts. The top layer that contacts your skin is a made from a seamless, four-way stretch microdenier fabric designed to move in harmony with your body and eliminate the chafing that can come with materials with too little stretch. It receives an antibacterial treatment and is bonded to a variable thickness pad made from multiple density foams; the result is a smoothly contoured pad that places the firmest foam where support is most needed. Perforated inserts help to relieve pressure on the sit bones and perineum—just where riders experience the greatest pressure.
The front of the tights are cut from Thermoflex Core Due to keep the wind out. This two-layer material traps air in a hollow-core layer of polyester while moisture is transported to the outer nylon/Lycra layer where it can evaporate. A simpler fabric, Thermoflex, is used for the portions of the tights not exposed to the wind for greater breathability. Giro++ grippers keep both the bib straps and ankles in place. It’s rare to find bibtights that are this light and this warm.
Like the bibs in the Rosso Corsa line, the waist of the Sorpasso Bib Tights is cut very low to eliminate restrictions on breathing caused by pressure on the belly.
The Castelli Sorpasso Bib Tights are Black/white and are available in six sizes from Small through XXX-Large.
Hollow core fibers trap warm air and move moisture better than traditional fibers
Progetto X2 chamois keeps your nether regions comfortable on long rides
Ankle zippers make the early-morning dressing routine a little easier
Bottom Line: Do the work now, reap results when it counts.
This bib tight has been very comfortable during 13 to 18 degree days. They breath very well and look great. Hopefully the next model does away with the red under padding at knee and crotch area as you can see shades of red around these areas when stretched. Should all be just black.
Top flight bib tight. 6 ft 185 and the XL works, but form fitting nonetheless. Real nice construction. Clever design. Rock on with these. Great full chamois.
I wore them yesterday in sub 35 degrees with snow all along the trail (got home in 33 degrees with the weak winter sun setting- it was cold). 30 miles. No worries with warmth. These tights were just fine. I was layed up up top, but for the working part below, the tights were enough.
As to sizing, yeah, I suppose I could have gone with XXL, but really, the XL works fine. They're tight. Semi-compression. I think, that's the point. The length I think dictates unless your thighs are like Thor's. Mine, not so much.
These are really comfy bibs! Very comfy straps, nice pad. I do have a couple of suggested modifications:
1) fit is really snug, even in the Medium. I ride Castelli team clothing and am a typical lean Cat 1, and their stuff always fits in a medium well for me. Even with a 29-inch waist, the Sorpassos run smaller than most Castelli stuff. Legs are tight if you have sprinter's legs, probably OK if you are built like a typical GC guy. Size up accordingly. I can wear the Medium, but it is borderline, and the large would probably be just fine. Since I wear Medium in about 10 other pieces from Castelli, this is a little annoying. They need to stick to their game-plan with regards to sizing. My Fondo bibs, also in a medium, fit a good size larger in comparison; they are a true medium, these are close to a small.
2) the weave of these bibs is supposed to be tighter and lighter than normal bibs. It would be cool (actually warmer) if they made the bibs a little heavier weight. They are not quite true winter bibs: under the high 30's, your legs are going to get cold; they run cooler than my Giordana and Pearl stuff. I know they make the Polare for a cooler bib, but it has windstopper material that doesn't stretch and fit as well as these do. It would be nice if they beefed up the Sorpasso for real winter conditions (say warm enough down to high 20's) as they have plenty of other bibs (like the Fondo) that are also in this temp range. Because of this, the knickers may be a better bet. I usually only run bibs when the temps are going to be sub 40 for the entire ride; you can run tall socks with knickers and get good coverage, then pull them down if it heats up later in the day.
As far as performance goes, and comfort, these are first rate. Just watch the sizing and keep in mind they aren't toasty warm.
Reviews all sound great on design and performance, plus I like the look - however 6' 2" and reasonably proportioned 200 lbs....sounds like I need to go 3XL for length alone!!! Anyone got intel on this dimension??
ROSSO CORSA BIBTIGHT. THAT MUST BE SPECIAL. We've put all our best technologies into this exceptional tight. Progetto X2 chamois, Giro++ straps, and a mix of fabrics, including our Thermoflex Core Due. By applying thetechnical advancement of hollow-core fibers, we've made these tights not only lighter than your normal tights but also warmer—and they keep you drier. Now you're ready to put in those long base rides all winter long.
Haven't tried 'em yet. So no comment there just yet. I'm still working out the sizing at this point. XL showed up today. I take a small in most cycling jerseys, med in most shorts. I'm 5-9. I know Castelli stuff runs small, but these tights seem to run even smaller. These XLs fit correctly in the butt, chamois, thigh, and calf, but are 2" too short in the cuff length, the upper bib straps are just a bit too tight/ short, and the knees are a little too tight (not good for the cartilage). Just ordered the XXL sizing today. Will post back results.
Ok, I've ridden in the XXL sizing twice now. I'm keeping 'em. Downsides: The XXL is still.. if you can believe this.. 2" too short at the cuff. I'm just not that tall. 30" inseam. Italians must be teeny tiny little mountain elves. Also, the bib straps are.. still.. too short, and place undue stress on yer shoulder muscles. Knee area is a bit tighter than it needs to be.
Positives: Great fabric. Today it was 55 degrees, 14mph chilly wind, and my legs and knees were the perfect temp. Had a Castelli thermal fleece jersey on, and that was a bit cold. These tights are medium weight, but go down to slightly lower temps than their weight. Seat pad is the best I've ever used. Continuous taper to the edges, and no seams. Love the Castelli graphics and design.
Overall, I think I like these tights. I'm going to modify the bibs with the sewing machine to loosen them up, and I'll have to buy some black thick socks for my ankles (ha!), but I do really like the design, comfort, temp management, soft laser cut shoulder straps, and awesome seat pad.
Castelli.. are you listening on the tiny sizing thing. I'm not Captain America. haha.. 5'-9", I'm keeping the XXL pair, and they're still too short. Feed your people some milk! :-)
When I ride in these, I keep thinking that they are even more comfortable than shorts! I don't feel the wind, they are not at all moist - very dry fabric. Fit and sizing was as expected - seems to be standard Castelli-sizing. It may be smart to go one size up compared to some other brands. Maybe fit depends a bit on body type. I'm very slim, and usually use M in Castelli wear. M in this one also fit nicely.
I bought these mostly for the chamois, the X2 being the top of Castelli's line, and that they're from the Rossa Corsa line which has the best aero fit. I bought XL at 6'2" 185lbs and they are just a tad short at the ankles but not bad. The straps are a nice medium width elastic with no seams and grippy underside. One small gripe is that the backside of the zipper pull at the bottom can dig into the ankle if you don't put your longer socks on/underneath the tights, especially if you have them a bit twisted and the zipper is more in the back of the leg (it kind of gnashes a bit on the achilles as you pedal). The tights themselves are more of a fall/early winter or early spring model as they don't have any wind protection or substantial insulation. Temperature is pretty subjective as it depends a lot on personal preference, wind, how fast you are going, etc. but these are definitely not going to keep your legs warm going 20mph in 0F weather even with no other wind. For the low temps and top Castelli Rossa Corsa brand you have to go with the Fulmine Bib Tight which I don't think they make anymore, at least not imported to the US. I have one pair of those and they are very nice tights as well. The Castelli's are on par with DeMarchi's that I also have (Contour Plus Ultra) and a step below Assos (any of the LL) which are the tops in just about anything clothes-wise in cycling.
Above 40 and maybe above 50. There's no windtex so they do not fit the "bloody cold" temp range, but if riding hard above 40 is right. If riding not so hard then how about above 50.
Wore them low 30s. Just fine. No wicked wind, which would beg some windstopper, but just cold. They worked fine.
These are my first pair of Castelli bib tights. I have a pair of knickers that I love, and the bib tights are even better because of the pad. The Progetto X2 chamois kicks butt! lol Better than their KISS pad, and on par with my high-end Assos pad. I just wish I could get a pair of bib shorts with this pad at a reasonable price AND leg grippers. :-) Overall, I would buy another of these if I needed more...
These bib shorts are awesome, only one thing would be make the Insanely Awesome, but I'll get to that. The inside is fluffy and stays dry and warm. I've not ridden them in the freezing temperatures yet, but have ridden in the low 40's and they were perfect. They fit my 6-4, 185 frame great (size XXL), no baggy areas, and no chaffing after 100 miles. The fit almost like comfortable pajamas. My only gripe is that straps are pretty wimpy and you need to strip off all your layers to relieve yourself. If you try and stretch the fronts down, you can hear tearing sounds, so not recommended. Putting in a small zipper would make these 5 Star (heck, even 6 stars!)
I was a little apprehensive about the sizing at first, after reading some of the reviews. I'm 5'9" and 164lbs with a 31" inseam and went with the XL. I'm happy to say the fit is perfect, including the length. I'm very happy with these, both in size and overall quality. The pictures don't do justice to the overall quality of the bib. No regrets at all.
I am 178 cm and 70 kg and I had to exchange large into extra large to have a comfortable but still tight fit. Great looking item due to quality material and fantastic design - you have to be born Italian to have that great sense of fashion / beauty. Tights are perfect ( not too warm ) for Chicago chilly weather rides.
Rode in 40 degree weather kept me very comfortable. I did go up a size, normally wear small but bought medium and they fit well.Nice chamois and good movement in legs-not restrictive.I really like these tights and would highly recommend them.
Wore these out on a 35 mile, 38 degree ride in upstate NY in February and they performed beautifully. Multiple 40-50 mile rides between 40-50 degrees felt even better. Yes, they fit snug. Yes, they're European sizing. I'm 6', 225 lbs and the XXL fit very comfortably. If you have a huge beer gut, buy another brand. The progetto x2 pad is the best I've used to date. The shoulder straps are silky soft, but durable after several washings and the leg zippers are heavy duty quality. I'll be buying the knicker version soon.
Disregard the sizing chart for these, and order two sizes up. Can't comment on the quality yet, as I returned the chart-fitted pair for a pair I could fit above the ankles. Like others have commented elsewhere, Castelli must sew size labels indiscriminately. Added 2 weeks later: Make it three sizes up. Geesh.
Great tights!! Went out this morning with temps starting at 4C and my legs weren't cold at all. They do run a size smaller. I wear medium and got the large. At first I thought it was a little snug, but once you get moving, they fit perfectly. The fabric appears like it is going to be too thin to keep you warm, but they had more than enough insulation with great flexibility.
