The stretchy and super-breathable Cutter Tech Knickerbocker saddles up when your ride isn’t quite spandex-worthy and flies under the style-radar when you’re not in the saddle. These ergonomically-fitted softshell knickers fend off light moisture and won’t restrict movement while you pedal. The Tech Knickerbocker’s ¾-length cut stays clear of your cuff-tearing chainring and the articulated fit pulls functional duty in the saddle, minus the fresh-from-the-Tour look when you meet your crew at the bar. Lock your U-lock in the Tech Knickerbockers back pocket snap for a safe ride downtown, and thank the Polartec Power Shield softshell material for its weather-shunning radness as it starts to drizzle on your way home from the bar. Should you take the occasional tuck and roll across the pavement, Polartec Hardface Technology has you covered with outstanding durability.
First, don't get these for racing, they're not skintight spandex®. These are incredibly comfortable, soft, just stretchy enough and exceedingly water-resistant. I rode through some pretty nasty wetstuff in New Hampshire this summer and no matter how wet the trails got, the water just beaded off. I suspect that a major downpour would get them soaked, but I further guess that they'd dry really quickly. The workmanship and styling is great: I wore them out for brunch and mini-golf with the family. I'm not a pockets-on-my-gear kind of guy, so the numerous storage possibilities on them are a minor downside for me. But, that's a personal preference. I don't like giving away secrets, but Cutter® is too cool to keep hidden in my closet. Get these! They rock.
PS Sizing seems to be spot-on: I'm a 34" waist and the medium fit perfectly. I'm short and they come just below my knees, too. And, finally, they do stretch a bit and they have belt loops, so if your weight fluctuates, these will expand a bit (or vice versa) with you.
The articulated knees for the Knickerbocker is a good one. A century ride will brake them in. It even stays put when I do a hand stand on the video below: http://vimeo.com/12751511
How does this Polartec Power Shield Stretch Woven with Hardface Technology material compare to the other CutterTech knickers that are made with Nylon Stretch Softshell ? Are there any other differences between the two knickers?
Here are the two knickers that I'm comparing: http://www.realcyclist.com/roadbike/CUT0029/Cutter-Tech-Knickerbocker-Mens.html
These are basically the same, one is from our first round of production and the other from round 2. The fabrics will be very similar, the only real difference is the color choice.
I was a bit apprehensive about spending the money for biking pants with no chamois. Now I'm kicking myself for the months that I spent riding without these. They are absolutely the most comfortable pants I have ever ridden in. They move exactly like riding pants should. I had no problem with any bunching pulling. The back doesn't slip down, so you don't end up mooning traffic or other riders. Throw on some long socks, and I've ridden these in the low 30's while there was still snow on the ground with no problem.
I got these shorts and they are great. Never too hot and never too cold. Well.. They are great for riding around or hanging out. I would say they run a little big, but they are still a good fit.
I've been trying various 3/4 cycling pants/knickers lately and these fit the best by far. The waistband is comfortable and there's plenty of room in the legs. Once I put these on, I didn't want to take them off. Perfect for the work commute.
I've these knicks for a little over a month now. This morning they finally got their first wet weather test, and I'm pleased to say they exceeded my expectations. It was a typical Seattle fall drizzle on my ride to work, and the water beaded up and rolled right off even better than my rain jacket (which is admittedly overdue for a treatment.
I think they're perfect for fall/spring riding, and I've worn them on mornings as cool as 38 degrees in perfect comfort thus far, and I expect they'll be good down to near freezing before I need to switch to wool. They're a little on the warm side when it gets over about 60 degrees, but I'm generally riding something a little lighter at that temp.
The cut is pretty true to size (I'm generally a 34-36 waist and the L fits perfectly) and the style is ideal for casual commuting or cruising around town - the articulated knees and stretch in the fabric make them very comfy and they don't bind or ride up where they shouldn't. I usually ride with a chamois base layer, and these accommodate/hide the extra layer just right.
They're well worth it, but a little steep at full price. I got mine during the Sag Wagon sale for under $100, and I've seen them on Bonktown a few times around $80.
I was wondering this too, and asked on the live chat, they said no more on order :(. Backcountry.com, the people would highly appreciate a reasonably priced softshell knicker, please order some more!
These are pretty sweet, they are really nice material for cycling and keep you very comfortable. the only gripe is that for me the fit is a little weird around the knee area, which doesn't really bother when riding, but when not on the pedal it feels a little funny.
I like the fabric and the weight and could be happy with these knickers if only they were longer. My problem is that I'm thin and six feet tall. The medium (which is a little large for my 32 waist size) isn't long enough to stay comfortably below my knees. The fabric rides up to where my knees are exposed more than they should be in a cold breeze. Needs to be about three inches longer.
I would recommend these for shorter guys who are looking for an unpadded cycling knicker for cool weather.
Quick cell shot I took while commuting the other day. I still stand by my review. These are money. They are the only bottom I've worn commuting for the past two months.
These knicks are at their BEST in the shoulder seasons. I've been wearing one of our test pieces since last autumn and the equinoxes are the best time for the techknickerbokcer. As long as its over 40F and under 90F, i'm riding in the knickers. The softshell's breathability is amazing in the warmer months, and the wind-resistance/water resistance is awesome for the colder ones. Basically: never too warm, rarely too cold for the Techknickerbocker.
I've been riding in these for a few months now and am extremely pleased with the performance. TONS of stretch and a fit that is perfect for cycling. So far I've experienced no pilling - the surface seems extremely abrasion resistant but the inside is very comfortable next to skin. I have about a 32" waist and the mediums fit me perfectly. Unlike other knickers I've tried in the past...the girl friend approves of the Tech Knickerbocker styling, big win.
Just got these & rode them to work today. They are not like the other knickers that I have. The subtle style is great. Also these are very comfy to ride in! I am really not into the standard bike short for the shorter rides. These fit well. I am 5'11 & 175. I don't prefer a super tight fit, so I went with the size Large. They are "stretchy" so one could go with the Med if you wanted that "tight" style. Also, these have an "ergo" cut to them that makes them a pleasure to pedal in.
So far I've put in about 15 days on the Cutter Tech Knickerbocker and I don't have a single negative thing to say about them. They hardly look like they've been worn. So pilling, abrasions, or other signs of wear.
First things first, I'm about 6' tall, 180 lbs. I typically wear a 34" waist in pants and they fit a little big. I have a medium in the Knickerbocker and fit around the waist is perfect. Just a little loose but they don't slide down. Length is just past my knees.
I've worn these on rides from everything from 40 degree mornings, to 85 degree sunny afternoons, 50 degree downpours, to 80 degrees with high humidity. They were comfortable and excelled in all conditions. They do get wet in heavy rain (imagine that) but repel light rains. They don't cling or snag when wet either. They do dry quickly.
The stretch fabric offers great range of motion. No tightness when swinging my leg over the bike to get on or off. It moves with you when you ride.
Plenty of pockets to store phone, keys, wallet, patch kit, small camera, u-lock ...pretty much anything you want. When empty you hardly notice that there's extra pockets.
These are now my go-to bottoms for anytime I ride. I wear them everyday when I commute. I would recommend them 100% to anyone and everyone.
I know not everyone has quads like Captain America, but if you do, these probably won't work for you. They are one of the most impressive pieces of gear I've seen out there (and I've seen a lot), but they were just too tight on my thighs. I bought the XL, because I'm right between a 38 and 40 waist, and the waist fit fine. I have fairly muscular legs, and the bottoms of these were actually tight around my calves as well, leaving the only parts that actually fit as my waist and knees. This was funny to me as I've had two knee surgeries in the last year, and my knees are still swollen pretty regularly. At any rate, this is an incredibly nice piece of equipment if your legs tend more towards aspen than sequoia.
commuting in wet weather can be fun, but you need the right gear. i rarely run around in lycra, always use an over short for abrasion, and to just feel..... normal.
but my overshorts i have been using fit like shit. baggy and no stretch, or baggy and weird stretch, or just plain funky. pockets, and weird vents.
this knicker is the ticket. stretch woven material that is durable, and water and rain, hell even mud, can not stick to! pockets where i need them, belt loops to just wear a belt. what a concept.
you can dirtbag them for days, just keep riding them.... they fit better and better.
