Mavic Cosmic Carbone Ultimate Wheelset - Tubular

The Mavic Cosmic Carbone Ultimate might be the lightest, stiffest, most aerodynamic wheelset ever made. Mavic used more carbon fiber in this wheelset than we've ever seen before, from the 40mm aero rims to the bladed spokes and even the hubs themselves. The spokes are molded directly to the rims and hubs, so there are no nipples, and no holes to weaken the system. In fact, the only metal parts at all are the axles, rear hub body and freehub. Oh, and the included quick-release skewers are titanium. So go ahead, make the jump. Your kids might never go to college, but you will have some seriously low split times.

Bottom Line: Carbone means carbon. Ultimate means ultimate.

As desirable as they look these are not safe just like the R-Sys

Do ask me how or why but this past weekend on July 5th during the Gold Pointe Criterium I watched this wheel disintegrate on the road. It sounded like a flat tire but really a spoke or two may have snapped and consequently all the spokes broke and the rim took off as and I watched the bike fall on the front dropouts and injure the rider. I don’t care if the wheel had been compromised in some way in the past this should not happen and should concern you. Just like the recalled R-sys this wheel is not safe. I am sure this guy will not contact Mavic so they may not know how crappy the wheel is, but you know because I am telling you.
I usually only review products I love but I am making a exception in this case. I know they are light and beautiful but they are just not safe. Not to mention there are better wheel for the money.

Love these wheels

I picked these up at a bike swap meet for a steal and started using them as my regular wheels. I have hit everything from holes to railroad tracks and they are as true as the day I brought them home. I weigh in at 155lbs. And light, you can't believe it when you hold one in one hand and a 'regular' wheel in the other. These are pro quality wheels.

They can and do break and when they do it seems that they can all go at once becaue of the uneven load on the rim. See my review.

It's possible to break these if you stick something through them at speed, but they are STRONG. If you youtube "Cosmic Carbone Ultimate test", you'll see videos of some Itallian guys smacking the spokes with a sledgehammer. I'm not sure how hard they are really hitting it, but the spokes don't break.

i have to agree with greg,they are pro quality wheels... i have ridden these on my felt f1 next to my zipp 404s and have been blown away....simply amazing wheels.......

Best race wheels out there

These are the best race wheels out there. the are very light and stiff. Almost as light as the lightweights and much stiffer rear wheel. They also have some of the best aerodynamics in its class as well, and the are the best when it comes to aero/weight combo. I would recommend getting the mp3 (crash protection plan) when you buy them. mavic will give you a 2 year no questions asked replacement on these. that will allow you to ride hard in the next corner and not worry about wrecking a $3800 set of wheels.
