The Northwave Men's Vertigo SBS Road Cycling Shoe works through several channels to transfer force effectively, minimize wasted energy, and maximize comfort. Northwave gave this high-performance shoe a fiberglass-filled nylon sole enriched with carbon powder for stiffness and better pedal feel—doughy freshman feet, beware. The Vertigo uses Northwave's patented Step By Step buckle, which not only lets you micro-adjust the tightness (see silver piece), it allows you to release pressure in equally small increments (see yellow piece), so you experience a custom fit. You'll also enjoy natural-feeling heel hold, thanks to the Y-shaped heel counter, and well-ventilated feet, courtesy of Airmesh uppers and perforated footbeds.
You won't find an italian-made road shoe with a ratcheting buckle for anywhere near this price anywhere. If you have wider feet and prefer a roomy toebox, this shoe is for you. These run just a little bit bigger than Diadora or Sidi. They're stiff enough without being too hard on your feet. My only complaint is the weight- they're a little on the heavy side, but for the price, they can't be beat.
These will be great for spinning but most spin shoes use 2- Hole spd cleats. So you will need to pick up an adapter that converts the 2 hole to a 3 hole.
I've been riding in stirrups for quite some time before deciding to go clipless. Quite a difference in effort required to generate power. The NW Vertigo SBS shoe makes me feel like I'm part of the bike. The shoe is super comfortable and I like the top strap adjustment which allows slight incremental tweaks for perfect fit.
Not a perfect shoe but for the price it did me right. Unfortunately the sizing did not work out like the chart says. I wear a civilian size 10 normally. My other cycling shoes are a 44. I bought the 42.5 like the chart indicated. Too small. Sent them back and got the 43 and they fit pretty good. My only concern is whether I will wear the shoe out before the buckle stops working. Not that I will but the whole mechanism seems a bit sketchy. I would prefer cheap ol' velcro now that I've tried out my first buckle shoe.
Does anyone know how to un-jam the strap on a northwave vertigo sbs cycling shoe? my strap is stuck and I can't release the strap from the binding mechanism.
Sorry. Anyway, I finally had to clip the little plastic thing. The two runners on the side? I snipped them off allowing the strap to lay flat which allowed me to work it back through. Hope that made sense.
I had this same problem. The strap was supposed to go below in that groove that feeds it through but unfortunately I slipped it in from the top over that leader thing. It would not budge. I spent 30 minutes trying to get it undone. I finally had to
These shoes are a great value. I previously had the Northwave Hornet, but had to return them since the sizing was a bit off. I picked these up as a replacement, and boy am I glad I did. I love the a) design and look of the White/Black option and b) the buckle system. A very comfortable pair of shoes. Recommended for a roadie on a budget.
Northwave fits wider in general. However it is not specified here. If they are offered in wide options it will be mentioned in the select options drop down menu.
These shoes feel awesome. I have ridden them a few times now and they are so comfortable with no heel lift. The buckle system is so easy to use and efficient that I find it hard to believe that I haven't always ridden in a pair of Northwaves. With Backcountry's awesome return policy, finding the right size was a breeze! Awesome shoes, even better company to order from.
so what if i dont know what my size is in these shoes, and i want to buy them, do i buy both pairs for the same amount of money as one pair or do i buy two pairs for regular price?

I sweat a lot and these shoes are very breathable, they fit perfect for my wide foot and the ratchet works perfect and its somehow adjustable to the amount of pressure to whatever position you put the ratchet on your forefoot. Great beginner shoe (for Me).
they're comfortable, and they work just as i expected. If you're looking for a starter shoe you couldn't find a better choice. the fit is great and the vents work well to cool your feet. no hot spot that i've found, size is true...sure you can tell that they're not top of the line quality, but for the price i'm very happy.
I wish I had an easier answer for you other than you need to try both on. Most people I know find Northwave fairly comparable to Pearl Izumi, but really, every single shoe has a different cut. Yes, even within the same model line from a manufacturer. It's an inherit flaw of shoe-making.Except for Crocs. But those things suck.Because Backcountry has a killer return policy, you can order both and simply return the one that doesn't fit.
First pair of Road shoes ever. Been Mtn. Biking for a bit now. Never wore NW's but I can say for sure. Unless I get a pair of free shoes from any other Co. My next pair (Rd or Mtn) of shoe will be NW's everything seems to fit, look, feel, cost right with this shoe. Might not be the most "popular" name out there but it sure does make a case for title "best overall" for sure! Get them try them. If at worst you think I am a liar. With BC's return policy. How could you ever go wrong?
if i buy these shoes, do they come with the appropriate pedals? this would be the first time i've purchased bike shoes, so i don't know what else i'll need.
I just want to say these are my second pair of riding shoes i have ever had and the best pair. first things first , the help they have there at backcountry is great and friendly i ordered a size to small the first time and they had no problem talking with me more then once to answer my questions. i love the way you can just reach down and use the ratchet system on the strap and if its to tight push the little button and everything is good to go .good fitting shoe,ok i,ll stop now but thanks again, i will be ordering again soon.
These shoes fit well out of the box. Lots of room in the toe box, good air flow, and they look like a million bucks. If you are looking for a good pair of shoes that want break the bank these are the ones!
I wear a size 10 in Brooks running shoes. My foot is a bit wider, so I can't wear Nike's because they are too narrow. Brooks and Adidas fit just right for me as far as running shoes go. After reading the reviews I decided to get try the Northwaves because everyone says that they have a wider toe box and that sounded like what I was looking for. The recommendation to go a half size up was good. I will say that even going with the 43cm (10.5 equivalent) the shoe is snug. This is perfect for me though as I know they will stretch a little and I don't like a lot of extra room in my cycling shoes. Right now I can just barely wiggle my toes. If you want your bike shoes to fit like your running shoes, I would suggest buying a full size larger.
Also, Realcyclist is totally awesome! Ordered on Friday, had them in hand on Tuesday. That was with regular shipping to Washington.
I got htese for my husband and he raves about how great they are. he was wary of the ratchet but loves how it makes the shoe fit! he also really likes the air flow.
