It's chilly and foggy out, but you don't want to ride in a stiff, crinkly rain jacket. Stretch side and sleeve panels add flexibility to the Pearl Izumi Men's Optik Jacket. The wind- and water-resistant fabric magically remains highly packable and super lightweight, so it's easy to bring along and deploy the Optik. Pearl Izumi gave this biking jacket elastic along the cuffs and waist so the hems won't bunch up during your ride.
Bottom Line: You won't feel like a stiff when you zip into Pearl Izumi's Optik Jacket.
Thin, light, and surprisingly warm. Blocks wind and water better than most trash bags. It has absolutely NO insulation, and weighs next to nothing, but it's quite comfortable on 40-degree days with just a cycing jersey and some arm warmers on. The only thing I wish it had is a hood...or thumb holes. And as a bonus, it's quite shiny and spiffy for just wearing around.
Great jacket. - very light (could not find a lighter rain jacket on market) - fits snug (less wind noise) - keeps dry (though could not find any water column/mm info) I got a second one to leave in my bag.
This is a great packable windbreaker that is also sufficiently waterproof and dries quickly. I wore it in the Leadville 100 this year in rain, hail, and a bit of snow, and it performed perfectly. You cant ask for a jacket to do much more than that.
I'm delighted by how light this jacket is--lighter than other ultralight jackets I've seen. It packs really tight. I got caught in a downpour on my bike a few days after getting it. I only rode another 25 minutes in the rain, but it kept me dry. Just what I wanted in a superlight shell.
This jacket is incredibly functional but it does seem to be a bit roomier than advertised. I have used it to ride when its as cool as 45 degrees out with just a jersey and arm warmers underneath and been very comfortable. I wish it just fit a bit more snugly to reduce wind noise.
This jacket is great for rides that start cool but finish warm or as a take along for 'just in case it gets cold'. It weighs next to nothing and easily packs into a jersey pocket.
Super light, great fit, stretches in the right places. Just what I wanted for a stowable layer. Sizing must be for cyclists-a large is perfect for me, and I'm not that "large".
I am really happy with the cut on this jacket. It fits loose enough to wear comfortably even over my street clothes, but not so baggy that it is cumbersome. Packs down small, folding into itself. Weighing next to nothing this is great to pack with you on any ride. The only thing that I'd improve is the placement of the arm reflectors. I often use this commuting at night and when on the drop-downs the reflectors always orient themselves on the inside of the wrists, instead of pointing outward towards traffic.
I was A little turned off by the thin-ness of this jacket (especially considering its cost), but I became a believer when I used it on a relatively chilly/foggy morning ride. I guess my only complaint is that I don't feel like it "breathes" very well. As with most pieces of "cycling" apparel, I had to order an XXL, and it fits like a normal XL would, so these things run very small.
I bought the Screaming Yellow color to help make me more visible to drivers during my commute. It's definitely an eye catcher. It's also ultra-light and packs down into a very small size, which is another plus for commuting. It's pretty decent at keeping me dry in light rain, but will soak through in anything more than a drizzle.
Two minor things I dislike about it: I live in Florida so the addition of vents would have been very welcomed for summer rides home in the rain. Also, the zipper tends to catch in the fabric if you're not too careful. I've gotten the zipper caught in the fabric twice in only two months. Luckily I haven't torn the fabric but I've come very close to it.
Overall, it does exactly what I bought it for, namely to make me more visible to drivers.
This wind proof jacket does a good job at slicing through those windy days... especially here in Tulsa... does a decent job at shedding water too. I sprayed mine down with a light coat of silicon water repellent (available at sports/camping stores) and now it does even better when its wet out. Pearl color version is slightly see-thru but is highly visible... GET IT!
This is one of my most frequently used cycling garments. I use it as a windbreaker layer in the winter and as an outer layer on cooler mornings the rest of the year. The thinness is nice because it allows you to stuff it in a back pocket as the day gets warmer. I have had it washed (cold water/low heat) several times, and it is still in perfect condition.
I was looking for a nice lightweight jacket to throw in my bag on cloudy days, and this is it. Cut well, very comfortable compared to many of the Italian brands I've tried. Very nice material as well.
