Pearl Izumi Slice Ultrasensor Bike Short - Men's

If you're looking to get some undercarriage relief on long bike rides, pull on the Pearl Izumi Men's Slice Ultrasensor Bike Shorts. Raised channels on the 3D Elite Chamois offer contoured padding in high-pressure zones (i.e. your crotch). Silver ions in the chamois help reduce bacteria buildup. The Slice Ultrasensor Bike Short's eight-panel construction creates a fit that compresses your muscles and feels comfortable while you're riding.

Bottom Line: Channel crotch relief with Pearl Izumi's Slice Ultrasensor Bike Shorts.

It's Worth it to Upgrade

By: Dick
August 25, 2009

Because these were relatively inexpensive (approx $70 when I purchased them a few years ago), I used to own a couple of pairs for commuting and spin class. While adequate for commutes below 30 minutes, trust me when I say that your taint will thank you if you upgrade to a pair of shorts with a better chamois for lengthy or fast paced rides (including spin - a mediocre chamois mixed with crappy spin bike saddles will result in a fair amount of chafing).

Man, not sure how many years back a couple years ago is but the 3D Elite chamois these shorts come with since 2008 are easily one of the best available.

Hoe fo sho

By: Damon Salter
March 20, 2009

I was turned onto these shorts from my brother and they are now my go to shorts. I will try to cover something that is not already in someone else's review. So here are the top three things I love and one thing that is not as lovely.

Accolades:
1) They fit American body’s right, not like some of those Euro brands.
2) There isn't a diaper pad around your junk, so the stuffed look is not there but this is much more comfortable.
3) The 3D Elite chamois is top of the line.

Not so much:
1) The stitching pills up kind of quick but it never gets worse.
2) I have seen better material for compression in the high-end Hincapie shorts.

Good biking shorts

By: Clas Johansson
February 24, 2009

I have several different PI biking shorts and they have all been great for spinning or long rides in sunny California. The sizing is perfect for "normal people". I am 5'11, 180 lbs, 33 waist and medium is great. I tried Gore biking shorts but medium is to small and large doesn't fit, so I will stay with PI.

PERFECT!

By: Shane Baker
November 17, 2008

Not bulky between the legs and super supportive through the quads and gluts. Don't pinch the "nether" region. Like other's have said, I'd have to agree COMFY for sure! Definite MUST HAVE for long distance rides or for the morning commute.

Question on Fit for the Pearl Izumi Slice Ultrasensor Bike Short

Question on Fit for the Pearl Izumi Slice Ultrasensor Bike Short - Men'sHow does the sizing run on these shorts? I'm a 36" waist and every other short I own is XL and fits well. The Pearl Izumi sizing chart says I should order size L. Can someone who has these shorts advise if they really run larger than most in terms of L, XL, etc? Or should I stick to XL and ignore the sizing chart recommendations? Thanks!

I also am a size 36 waist, and I ride the Large's.....Pearl Izumi sizing is spot on.

If anything, Pearl tends to run on the smaller size of things. I think you'll be fine with an XL.I have a size large and am a 33 inch waist. For a 36 inch waist I would get an XL unless you like a little roll hanging over the edge.I'm 36 to 38 (depending on what I'm wearing) and I wear Xl in this short.

A Little Disappointed

By: aocm19761435566
June 9, 2009

I bought these shorts because I read in other reviews that the shorts were good for long distance rides. I have worn these shorts out on several rides over 50 miles. The first thing I noticed is that the chamois is not nearly as comfortable as my old Castelli's. I find myself, after 15 or 20 miles, to be constantly repositioning myself looking for a comfortable spot. The other thing about the shorts is that on my pair the hem is rough sewn and actually irritates my skin. The last ride I went on I had to pull the shorts up a bit to get the hem off the irritated area. The shorts fit true to size but I am not happy spending the about of money I did and having a pair of shorts I need to write a critical review over.

satisfied

By: elace3733

My boyfriend finally chose these after searching for bike shorts for a few months. He is super picky...he likes his spandex tight so things don't move around or chafe when riding and a chamois that doesn't feel like a diaper but has enough padding and padding in the right places. He does 50-100 mile rides a few times a week, usually mtn biking and he says these are the most comfortable shorts he has tried. He is 5'10, 210 lbs, 36 waist and has pretty big thighs but goes with a medium even though he wears a L or XL in casual clothing. (What's the point in baggy spandex!) He is muscular so nothing hangs over. Cons: the price, they are a little longer than he likes (I think these are 8" or 9") and the seams of the chamois come undone after a couple weeks of riding. I heard PI has a good warranty on this but I have just gone through the company I bought them from. If the seams didn't come apart so fast these would be 5 stars.

Comfortable, Light, Well-Made

By: djdickson
June 2, 2009

As a rule I don't especially like roadie shorts, but these are the exception. Extremely comfortable, good quality chamois, and cool. You hardly feel like you are wearing anything.

For what it is worth, I have a 37" waist and the Large fits just fine (I have not tried XL).

The shorts have a drawstring, although it tends to get sucked in on one side so you might want to knot it or risk losing it. I lost my drawstring after a few washes, but fortunately you don't really need it. The elastic waistband stays where it should-- it does not ride up or droop down. At least, not yet; we'll see what happens after a year or so. After two months, however, I am completely happy and just ordered a second pair.

Ideally I would like a small pocket for a cell phone, but that seems to violate conventional wisdom regarding "serious" cycling shorts. Perhaps someday a visionary bicycle shorts designer will discover pockets, and revolutionize recreational bicycling forever.

Great Fit.

By: Grant Sun
November 18, 2008

Yeah so these are the first bike shorts I've gotten. They actually made me feel naked the first time I wore them. I don't know if thats cuz I never wear tights or because they fit so well. From what I can tell I won't have any problems with these for miles and miles.

Comfortable, with a caveat

By: Smallring_Cyclist
June 8, 2009

For me these shorts are good for rides up to about 1.5-2 hours in length. Anything longer than this distance and the very large, thick chamois makes itself known in my size small pair.
Some of my riding buddies swear by these shorts in L and XL sizes, where the chamois is proportionately smaller, but if you're a S or M like me I suggest checking out Castelli's shorts and bibs.

Very good but not the best from BC

By: mle2926937
May 10, 2009

I like these shorts a lot, but I have another pair that I like even more, the Gore Bike Wear Power II Short from BC. It looks like they don't have them any more, but jump on them if they come back up, they're great. More comfortable on century rides, and I like the way the fabric slides over the saddle better. They were also a bit cheaper than the Pearl Slice. I will say this, the Pearls are longer, which is nice if you don't like the short shorts look. And they're my second most comfortable pair. But my rear does start to get a little sore after mile 45. In all fairness, this could be a consequence of my rear or my saddle and not the shorts.

Good fit, long lasting

By: Jonathan Wilson
November 25, 2008

I consider these shorts to be my standard. They have all the fit and confort without the big price tag. Don't consider short more expensive than this unless your going for that certain look, becasue your not getting anymore bang for your buck.

Outstanding

By: jmerson2169836

I own several pairs of bike shorts; but these are the most comfortable for long rides. They don't bind, they don't ride up, and the padding is the correct size....in the others I feel like I'm wearing a diaper. I hope that won't happen for a few more years......

The best

These are by far the finest bike shorts made. When it comes to cycling clothing nothing comes remotely close to Pearl Izumi. They are the clear leader in this sport by far. Quality all around with these shorts.
