Shimano Dura Ace FC-7950 Compact Crankset

Say goodbye to triple cranksets for good! The Shimano Dura-Ace FC-7900 Crankset employs a wide gear range to cover almost any cycling situation you get yourself into. A sleeker, more aerodynamic design than its predecessor saves about 15-grams of weight, and a precise fit between chain and chainring gives you increased power transfer efficiency. The FC-7900 makes super crisp front shifts and its improved bottom bracket seals reduce power-rubbing friction and contamination. Hollow forged thin-walled Hollowtech II crankarms reduce mechanical drag and add extra stiffness to this Shimano crankset.

  • Thin-walled forged aluminum crank and hollow chainring to save weight
  • 20% more rigid than FC-7800 against pedal load for increased power transfer
  • New seal design for BB adapter
  • New teeth design for improved chain contact

Bottom Line: Sleeker, stiffer, lighter, faster.

Someone please compare and contrast these for me.... the Dura Ace 7900 and the new FSA Ti Lite. The Dura Ace appears to be about 80 grams lighter. Which is the better choice?

Weight aside the DA will Shift Better will be a stiffer crank and will last longer with better overall performance.

This Crank will work with a Dura Ace 7800 10spd chain but you will see the best Shifting Performance from a Dura Ace 7900 10spd Chain. The 7900 chain is completely Compatible with your 7800 Frt, Rear Der and Cass.

The cogset and front dérailleur will be fine but the chain will be a little wide. It will work but it is not the recommended one to use. So you should be fine.

for med hills and flats what is better a three ring or a compact double?

You can also consider a regular double crankset. Compacts are all the rage right now for the big hills, but if you are mostly on the flats, a standard double would work as well.

Tony, I agree with Damon. Compact double front chain ring 50-34 teeth count with a 11-28 rear cassette will get you about ever range you need.....Very rarely - occasionally, for flat high speed criteriums or road races that end in a slight down hill finish (I will change it up to a standard 53-49) But really the compact with the 11-28 is the best option!

A Compact Double is better if you are not touring or climbing steeps. A compact double usually cover 90-95% of the gear range of a Triple chaining model without the extra weight and derailleur hassles. The compact doubles shift so smooth and quick, ahh yeah.
