White Lightning Chain Lubricant

White Lightning's “Self-Cleaning” wax-based lubricant is the original, unchanged, and some say the best chain, derailleur, and cable lube around. Pick up a squeeze tube to try out, and then come back for the big Jug-O'Lightning when you find out what's up.

Bottom Line: If we didn't use it ourselves, we wouldn't sell it.

OK Lube

By: Randy Sherwood
May 23, 2009

This lube doesn't leave as much grime on the chain as some other lubes I have used, but if you have a problem with your chain, you better be carrying some surgical gloves in your saddle bag, because your hands will still be covered in grease after handling your chain, even with this lube. I have also noticed that this lube doesn't last as long on the chain, so you have to apply it more often. According to the instructions, that is a feature of this lube, as it sheds itself from your chain, it also sheds the dirt, making your components last longer. I would recommend this lube, but listen carefully to your drivetrain, it will tell you when it needs lubed again.

I hear these wax based lubes are really only good for wet weather

I hear these wax based lubes are really only good for wet weather conditions, otherwise the wax clings tight to dirt and sand grit. I know it states it is self cleaning though so whats up?

In all honesty, we don't put wax based lubes on in our shop because they do trap tons of sand, grit, and otherwise. We're also located in an arid desert environment.I personally prefer Finish Line's Dry Lube, which Backcountry doesn't carry (sadly).I concur with Matt, except that I won't use anything but Dumonde Tech. If you're going to use White Lightning on your chain, clean the chain first, then clean it again after you've applied the lube to remove the excess(actually proper technique for any lube). Or you could just use Dumonde, which is way better and smells like blue cheese. KC

Good stuff, no doubt about it. Better than sticky gummy lubes.

Doesn't last long

By: Christian Johnson
November 24, 2008

I wanted the wax-based lube to work, I loved the idea of a cleaner chain and parts. But it just didn't last long enough for me. I found that when I applied it properly it was good for about 150 to 200 miles then I would have to reapply it. The final straw came when it ran dry during a ride, I still had a good two hours back to the house with a squeaky chain. Switched to tri-flow and never looked back.

Fine for the East

By: Gee Alsenz
February 2, 2009

A lot of discussion whether this is an East Coast intended lube. I would say yes. It shed wet soils and trail debris efficiently, but didn't perform nearly so well when I moved to CA for undergrad. I rode this lube primarily in PA/VT, and did consistently clean my chain after long rides because of general issues with mud/grit. I will admit that such consistent cleaning probably helped maintain the chain in suitable condition for this wax-based lube. Summary: if you ride on the torturous, ever-shifting conditions of the East where humidity is king, White-Lightning could be your Queen.

great taste less filling

By: Re Wikstrom Realcyclist.com Employee
September 30, 2008

i didn't really pay attention to the bottle size when i ordered, but now i realize 8oz is twice the size of your standard squeeze bottle you'd find in most shops, which i LOVE cause it's lasts a ton longer. I had been using the rock n' roll from my LBS, but that would do really weird things if i left it in my car in the sun. This one has worked great and doesn't get bloated and explode in my car (at least not so far).

By: JOHN GILCHRIST Realcyclist.com Employee

Keeps everything slippery and shifting great. Like the screw on top it keeps everything int he bottle unlike Pedro's lube. Just make sure you shake it up.
