Why use your real name? Well, because it's real. There's no hiding, but on the other hand, you get real credit for your knowledge.Plus, it pays off: you get 50% more credit for your contributions. For more info check out the Help Center

Cutter Glycerin Floor Pump

Cutter Glycerin Floor Pump

Rating for this product: 5 August 31, 2009

The twist lock is awkward unless you're familiar with it. While it's not a problem for personal use, the inevitable "hey can I borrow your pump" that happens in the parking lot gets annoying because you have to opperate the pump lock for the person.

The twist mechanism will not work with HED or Zipp 404 valve stem extensions. I don't know if it will work with others, but for those two wheel systems it does not.

Price for a metal-body pump with great handle is amazing.

(Accuracy v. Precision for the science kids) Gauge is precise, but consistently reads 5psi low (assuming that the cross-referencing gauge was accurate). Compensating for that, is simple.

Reliability Issues

Hutchinson Equinox Road Bike Tire

Hutchinson Equinox Road Bike Tire

Rating for this product: 1 August 27, 2009

I ordered a set of these to replace some stock Specialized Pro Cippos that were dying fast. After a sidewall blowout on the Pro Cippo rear (140-160 psi too high for an old tire?), I threw one of these on my rear wheel. I blew three tubes before I realized that the bead was exposed and abrasive due to lack of coverage by the rubber compound. I looked at the other unmounted, new tire and saw that it had the same issue.
Are they cheap, especially on Bonktown ($10/tire)? YES. Are they reliable? NO. Weighing reliability v. cost... I will use these on my fixie around town. I won't use them on my road bike, even for training. I'm simply unwilling to carry two extra tubes and multiple CO2s as a precaution. Also, if it's a group ride, I don't want to flat, get dropped somewhere "unpleasant" or possibly dangerous (some of the Indianapolis group training rides cut through some rougher neighborhoods). My training time and quality is important to me and that greatly outweighs a couple $$. Besides, the difference in cost has already been eaten up by the number of tubes that I've gone through.
As a replacement for these, I bought some Vittoria Rubino Pro Slicks on Bonktown for $19.99/tire. Lighter than the Equinox and better quality by far (5 stars for the Vittorias).

Fit/Comfort/Style

LAS Squalo Helmet

LAS Squalo Helmet

Rating for this product: 5 March 27, 2009

My head is exactly 59cm. In Giro helmets, sometimes the 59cm M size barely fits (Eclipse) and other times it's too tight (Stylus). With the LAS Squalo, my skull fits perfectly in the S/M, listed at 53-59. There is even enough room remaining for adjustment. As a result, I can fit a thicker beanie under the helmet on really cold days (which was never possible with any of my Giros).

The Squalo is infinitely more comfortable than any helmet I've ever worn. I was going to demote my current road helmet for commuter use and reserve the Squalo for my road riding. However, what's the point? It doesn't matter how many other helmets I have, after buying a Squalo, I now practice helmet monogamy.
