Still new to road cycling, about 14 months now. Just did my first century and a half. The MS150. I have about 4,000 miles on my Cannondale Cadd 8 now. Looking forward to many more miles... Did the "Horrible Hundred" last year as well. Awesome ride...

Rating for this product: 5 May 18, 2010

Bought these on Bonktown and love them. Large fits snugly, like a glove so to speak. Tried them out on a 75 mile ride the first day and they held up great. I usually wear long fingered gloves to protect my piano playing hands, but these were definitely cooler, temperature wise. Highly recommended.

Smith V Ti Interchangeable Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 5 February 17, 2010

I have really enjoyed my interchangeable sunglasses. I use the light colored lens in the morning before the sun comes up and the darker ones for organized rides. The lighter ones keep the bugs out of my eyes. They are very comfortable and the sweat does not run down the lens. Best pair of sunglasses I have owned.

Shimano Dura Ace PD-7810 SL Pedal

Shimano Dura Ace PD-7810 SL Pedal

Rating for this product: 5 February 16, 2010

After riding the lower end Shimano pedals and having them get pretty stiff, I started doing some research on better pedals. If you look at the exploded view of these pedals on the pdfs from the Shimano website, all the insides are the same bearings until you get to the Dura-ace pedals. I have been on these for a couple thousand miles now and they are as smooth as the day I got them. Highly recommended.

Answer to: "I have a Santana moutnain bike with Cantilever brakes and Compact"

Campagnolo Super Record 11 Skeleton Brake

Campagnolo Super Record 11 Skeleton Brake

June 12, 2009

There is no mention in the literature of using these with a mountain bike. The cantilever brakes have a different mounting system than these, which have a single mounting bolt. Does your bike have the correct mounting position for these? There is 40mm - 50mm of adjustment up and down on the brake pads, but I would be worried about fitting the tire and rim between the pads. A standard road tire is 23mm and yours is about 28mm. You can always click on the live chat button at the top right hand corner of this page and ask the gear experts. Answer to: "Which chain is the least likely to break?"

SRAM PC 1090R HollowPin Bike Chain - 10 Speed

SRAM PC 1090R HollowPin Bike Chain - 10 Speed

June 11, 2009

That is an open ended question. It depends on your riding style, your maintenance habits, who installs it for you, there are many factors. However, the lighter the chain, the less material holding it together, you do the math. I cleaned my dura-ace chain once a week and relubed with a wax based lubricant. I broke it at 2,000 miles. (on mile 147 of a 150 mile ride) I had it measured just before that ride and my LBS told me that I wasn't even close to needing a new chain. I have a couple hundred miles on a new Ultegra chain and so far so good. If you spin faster, a lighter chain would be OK. If you pedal hard and slow, you may want more steel in your chain. Be sure to do frequent inspections and cleanings. If you want to remove it for easy maintenance, I think the Whipperman is one of the few options left.

This is a very informative article on tire sizing. However, it may leave you more confused than you are now. If you stick with anything that is 700x25, it should fit your wheels. My wheels are 700x23, but I just switched to the Continental Attack/Force tires and the front is 700x22 and the back is 700x24. They fit fine and are faster than my old tires. Clifbar Clif Bars - 12 Pack

I eat these in the morning before a ride along with a banana. They sit well on my stomach, and in the advent of a longer ride, I carry one in my "bento box" to sustain my energy level. These don't give you the instant pick up of an energy drink, but seem to better sustain my energy throughout the ride. My favorites are the Blueberry Crisp, the Oatmeal Raisin Walnut, and the Chocolate Chip, which I don't see here.

OK Lube

White Lightning Chain Lubricant

White Lightning Chain Lubricant

Rating for this product: 4 May 23, 2009

This lube doesn't leave as much grime on the chain as some other lubes I have used, but if you have a problem with your chain, you better be carrying some surgical gloves in your saddle bag, because your hands will still be covered in grease after handling your chain, even with this lube. I have also noticed that this lube doesn't last as long on the chain, so you have to apply it more often. According to the instructions, that is a feature of this lube, as it sheds itself from your chain, it also sheds the dirt, making your components last longer. I would recommend this lube, but listen carefully to your drivetrain, it will tell you when it needs lubed again.

OK Pedals

Shimano PD-R540 SPD-SL Road Bike Pedal

Shimano PD-R540 SPD-SL Road Bike Pedal

Rating for this product: 4 May 21, 2009

These are my first road pedals and they have worked flawlessly. The adjustable tension is perfect for beginners. Set them light and they are very easy to get in and out of. I have never had one of these unclip on me unless I was trying to unclip. The yellow cleat they come with have a little float so you don't have to be as exact on the cleat placement. Highly recommended.

UPDATE: After about 2,000 miles, the left pedal has developed a very annoying creak. I don't know what is causing it, the cleat against the pedal or something inside the pedal. I have tried lubing the joint where the pedal turns, but the bearings are sealed and not user serviceable. If all you get is 2,000 miles out of these pedals, I'm not sure I would recommend them.

Continental Grand Prix Attack/Force Tire - Set

Rating for this product: 5 May 20, 2009

I have now used the Michelin Pro 3's and the Vittoria Zaffiro. The Michelins are fast but cut and flat easily. The Zaffiros are tough and slow but not long lasting. I rode these in my first century and a half this weekend and they were awesome. I immediately felt less road hum and noticed less resistance from the Zaffiros. I can't comment on their durability yet, but the ride is very nice. Easily comparable to the Michelins.

Answer to: "How long does it take to break in one of these?"

Brooks Heritage Saddles Team Pro Saddle - Men's

Brooks Heritage Saddles Team Pro Saddle - Men's

April 27, 2009

It's not so much breaking in the saddle as it is your sit bones getting accustomed to it. I ride a very similar Selle San Marco Regal saddle. Almost identical to these. It has very little padding and seems very hard to the touch. However, I can go all day on it. 2 days ago I did 65 miles and no soreness in that area. I am fairly new to cycling, but one of the most important things I have learned is that you have to stand up every 10 minutes or so and let the blood get back into your butt. Ever since I have started doing that, my discomfort in that area has been just about eliminated. I would highly recommend a saddle like this one, even though it isn't the lightest or most high tech, it is the most important thing between you and your bike.

Your best bet is to check out the measurements on the sizing chart. Where are these typically too small? The chart gives thigh measurements for you to compare to. Also length. Remember, Backcountry gives a lifetime warranty on whatever you buy here, so if you are not happy, you can always send them back!!

Great Shoe Update

Sidi Genius 5.5 Carbon Composite Shoe - Men's

Sidi Genius 5.5 Carbon Composite Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 25, 2009

I received the "mega" version in a 43 and they fit very well. Just what the doctor ordered. Somehow, the Sidi are easier to clip into the pedals, the velcro straps "lock" into place, and the buckle works well. I crashed and burned a couple of days ago riding in the dark, but the material held up very well where I scraped it on the asphalt. Highly recommended.

Shimano SH-WR80 Cycling Shoe - Women's

Shimano SH-WR80 Cycling Shoe - Women's

March 13, 2009

Yes, it should be done at a dealer. First they heat the shoe then you put it on and they put a vacuum bag over it and vacuum it to your foot. I have a close friend who is having it done today. If you don't buy these from the local bike shop they probably won't do the heat and vacuum for you, or at the very least will want to charge for it.

Sidi Genius 5 Bike Shoe - Women's

Sidi Genius 5 Bike Shoe - Women's

March 9, 2009

I am also fairly new, but here is what I have learned. Mail ordering shoes is tricky. I would suggest going to your local bike shop and trying some on. This will give you an idea of how the different brands vary in size. Now armed with that information, you can find the right shoe at the right price here on backcountry. Even if you get the shoe and aren't happy with it, you can always return them to backcountry. They have a 100% satisfaction guarantee for the life of whatever you buy here. I have Cannondale and Sidi shoes and the Sidi are better in make and materials. They are also easier to walk on, which will be more important than you think. You can also go to www.roadbikereview.com and see what other people are saying about all kinds of shoes. Welcome to cycling and have fun!!

Great Shoe

Sidi Genius 5.5 Carbon Composite Shoe - Men's

Sidi Genius 5.5 Carbon Composite Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 5, 2009

I just got a pair of these. My foot has always been somewhere between a regular shoe and a wide shoe. I also have somewhat of a high arch. These shoes do not fit my feet. I will be returning these and getting the "mega" which are made for wider feet. However, the materials, craftsmanship, and overall quality is obviously superior to my current Cannondale shoes. I would highly recommend these if you have a more average foot than mine. I got a size 43 which they call out as a size 9 and the length was correct.

Shimano SPD-SL Cleat Sets

Shimano SPD-SL Cleat Sets

Rating for this product: 4 February 20, 2009

I have the yellow version and I agree with Matt, they are pretty comfortable for the knees. Sometimes when I am standing and really cranking the "float" can be a little disconcerting. But I have grown accustomed to it after about 800 miles. When these wear out I will probably try some Speedplay pedals.

Answer to: "whats the length of this lock?"

Planet Bike Mini Extra Guard U-Lock

Planet Bike Mini Extra Guard U-Lock

February 19, 2009

I found that this lock is big enough to go around the seat stay on a frame and around a bike rack. The inside diameter is almost 2". So as long as your frame is under 1", most seat stays are, and the bike rack is under 1", you're good.It won't work for all bike racks, but a lot of racks around here have thinner bars.Just remember to also lock up your wheels with a cable. What I like about this lock is that it's less than half the weight of a regular sized U lock. Plus, because it's so small, it makes it impossible to try to pry open.

Race tires only

Michelin Pro3 Race Road Tire

Michelin Pro3 Race Road Tire

Rating for this product: 4 February 3, 2009

I got these tires on my first real road bike. I bought the bike to continue exercising to get in shape and loose weight. I ride about 100 miles a week in Orlando, FL on the roads in and around the south side of town. I had my first flat at 400 miles. I have been patching the outer gray part of the tire with shoe "Goop". These tires are very prone to cuts and I would not recommend them for recreational riding. I expect to get about 500 - 600 miles out of these tires. I have already purchased a different set of tires to replace these with because they cut so easily. I think these would be great if you had a separate set of rims for racing and used something else for training.

Shimano PD-R540 SPD-SL Road Bike Pedal

Rating for this product: 3 February 3, 2009

These work pretty well, but I have a difficult time clipping into them. I have been using them for a couple of months now and it is still hit or miss after a stop. I will be looking for a different system next time I purchase pedals and shoes. They are quite easy to clip out of though and I have never clipped out accidentally. I pedal pretty hard on the up stroke and these have always stayed clipped.

I have had a close call with the chain almost breaking because of an improperly inserted pin from the person I bought it from.
