A must have for cold weather riding

Craft proZERO Extreme Crew Baselayer Top - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Craft proZERO Extreme Crew Baselayer Top - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 February 23, 2010

I have other baselayers for winter and this is the one reach for most. I only wish I had more.
The fabric is soft, with enough give to let you move, yet snug enough to form to your body so there's no unwanted bulk. The shirt tail comes down over your hips to keep you warm through the kidney and lower back area. A real plus, all my other warm baselayers' hems stop at the waist, or just below, which means I have a gap once I'm stretched out on the bike. The sleeves are long too, but not unnecessarily so. I have short arms, everything is long for me, but these are perfect. Fabric wicks moisture away from body without allowing for any evaporation effect which would make you colder. I can usually get by with the Craft proZERO under a thermal longsleeve jersey in temps of 50-48F with no jacket. I've also worn this baselayer under my Etxe Ondo WIndstopper Jacket (which is more like a jersey than a jacket) in temps as low as 38F and been fine.
Holds up well wash after wash, no pilling or snagging. I am 5'3", 132lbs (curvy vs. lean muscle) and I wear a Medium comfortably.
I highly recommend this product, worth EVERY penny!

Strange in so many ways

Castelli Cocoon Cycling Knicker - Women's

Castelli Cocoon Cycling Knicker - Women's

Rating for this product: 1 December 20, 2009

These were my first Castelli bottoms, and such a disappointment! First of all, who wears knickers to "stay cool"? Don't answer that, I don't want to know. I suppose that is why the fabric is verging on transparently thin. I ordered a Medium, which are too big, except in the waist; so no chance I would try a Small. The chamois is wide, or stiff or something strange that causes it to fold - UP - I'll let you imagine were it goes and what that's like. I don't see how these could provide any compression or supprt to your muscles, and found them to be the strangest knickers I've ever tried on. I returned them. Of course now some one is going to have to give 5 really good reasons why I should ever try Castelli bottoms again.

Form meets function

Pearl Izumi Symphony Ultrasensor Bike Short - Women's

Pearl Izumi Symphony Ultrasensor Bike Short - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 August 30, 2009

These are one of the few PI shorts I still wear. They run a bit smaller than my other PI's I have, so this Medium from my beginner days on the bike are still great. I tried on a pair recently and PI must be changing their sizing, 'cause the Smalls wear crazy small.
I digress; I love the color accent piping, we all get tired of black on black so anything to add panache is such a plus. I also like having that leg pocket, perfect for a nutrition, I.D. or mad cash (for those lattes after the ride) These shorts offer great muscle compression, the longer length makes them perfect for cooler rides and adds protection and extra support for your legs. Chamois is o.k., I find the edges, that fabric that's there to absorb sweat were your legs meet your body, are less of a help than something I'm trying to get out of my way when riding. It's like it 'bite' my inner thigh. Slather enough chamois creme on and it seems to be tolerable. But why should I spend my ride time wiggling my shorts into a comfortable spot when I have other companies to choose from? (note: I have fallen out of love with PI, started trying European brands and the difference is astronomical.)

Nice knicker

Pearl Izumi Symphony Ultrasensor Knicker - Women's

Pearl Izumi Symphony Ultrasensor Knicker - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 August 30, 2009

I bought a pair of these last fall and wore them all the time. Not suitable for truly cold weather- I'm in Southern Arizona cold here is anything below 50 degrees. The fabric is light weight, so even I found them a bit thin. I was expecting more insulation from a knicker. On the upside, they worked well all the way into April when rides would begin with temps of 55 and then rise to 75-80 by 11 am. Great muscle support, and moisture wicking. Good padding from the chamois. I also love the pocket on the top/back of the hips. I'm becoming a pocket addict, can't have too many especially when your riding in the layer up then peel them off season.

Answer to: "Can you tell me the waist and length measurement of a Small and"

Descente Strata Bike Short - Women's

Descente Strata Bike Short - Women's

August 16, 2009

Descente's Size chart ( you can find a link with almost all the other Descente shorts sold on this website. Not sure why it's absent from these shorts) has these measurements:
XS S M
Waist 24-26 26-28 28-30
Hips 34-36 36-38 38-40
Inseam 28" 29" 30" this has to do with how long they think your legs should be, not shorts' inseams.

Has Descente changed their size chart? Your answer to Cheri's

Descente Strata Bike Short - Women's

Descente Strata Bike Short - Women's

August 11, 2009

Has Descente changed their size chart? Your answer to Cheri's question about the waist/length dimensions is one size SMALLER than Descente's posted chart. Do I now need to order a size larger than I used to? Is the shift in sizing only on certain shorts, i.e. Strata vs AeroX?

Extremely Good Looking, but

Pearl Izumi Limited Edition Short - Women's

Pearl Izumi Limited Edition Short - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 July 12, 2009

I bought the Edelweiss Red, Small, because it was love at first sight. Looks-wise these shorts do not dissapoint. That is why I am so sad to report that the performance leaves a lot to be desired. Chamois' outer edges really dig into the crease between body and leg, even with Chamois butter, at least until you sweat enough to soften them. I've worn them twice, on rides of 30 miles or less, can't imagine how chaffed one would be after 50+ miles. I can't believe how soar I am after a nothing little training ride. Add to this the padding is oversized at the back of the short. I actually checked this while riding no-hands - the back of the chamois pad comes a full 11/2 past where my saddle makes contact with my rear end. This shape distribution also means that my sits bones -where I atually want the padding - is left with no padding. The waist is too high and becomes distracting when in an aero tuck.
And then there was the horrible revelation that where my nice White Craft jersey had overlapped the shorts I had a lovely bleed spot from sweat+red shorts= pink/red water mark.
On the up side, I love the folded leg band - no "sauage leg" syndrome and the legs stay put. The fabric is really soft and feels great against the skin.
I'm sick about the money I spent on a short that will never see the light of day again. At least I looking crazy fabulouse while I was wearing them!

Excellent Shorts

Descente Aero-X Short Bike Short - Women's

Descente Aero-X Short Bike Short - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 June 30, 2009

These were my first pair of Descente's. (normally I'm a Pearl Izumi girl)The fabric feels light yet compressive, and is very soft on the skin. Chamois gives great pressure relief and moves with you. ( Note: I am super sensitive when it come to chamois and saddle, so if I say it's comfortable, it's really comfortable)
Light enough to be worn in temps of 85-90, with great moisture wicking. I wore these on a challenging mountain climb ride - 2500' elevation gain over 5.6 miles on switch backs, then the technical down hill - I was completely comfortable the entire ride. Best of all my legs weren't even soar the next day. About the only complaint I ever had was the leg opening is smallish so you get the dreaded "sausage" leg look. I have also dropped weight and am on the lower end of the Medium size, so now the chamois bunches. I'll be getting Smalls, can't live without this short. Plus, Descente has made some improvements to their women's shorts. Namely, the wide waist and leg bands for greater comfort... can't wait!
And for the record, I am 47, 5'3", 130#, muscular but not a stick or a thick tomboy physic100+ miles a week in hill and mountain country, and ride an average of . I think it helps to know what the reviewer looks like.
