One summer, six years old, I was riding my bike as usual and did the unthinkable, I removed the hands from the bars. In that moment I was immortal, unfallable, and sure that I was capable of anything life could ever throw at me. I have been chasing that dragon for the rest of life putting thousands on mile on my bike. Since then, I have managed to solve world hunger, tamed lions, completed emergency brain surgury in a busy lobby, and polished off untold number of beers in one sitting; but still, I marvel for that moment of truth, the moment the hands left the bars for the first time.

LOOK Cycle 566 SRAM Rival Road Bike - 2009

March 11, 2009

Look at those great ergo-carbon levers on the 2009 SRAM Rival and look Mom, no cables hanging out like that Shimano Ultergra. If you haven't read Bicycling magazines review of SRAM Rival find the Feb. issue. They are lighter, better, and priced to destroy all the competition. I can't find any reason why anyone would shell out more money on the Ultegra group.

Answer to: "Has anyone weighed one of these? I can't find anything,"

Vredestein Latex Ultralight Tube - Presta

Vredestein Latex Ultralight Tube - Presta

March 2, 2012

(Below is some information I pulled from another Vredestein site)
The Vredestein Latex tube is a lightweight champ at 49 grams. Latex tubes also help to increase tire suppleness for better road feel, handling and maximum tire performance. The Vredestein Latex tube has a smooth valve stem and removable valve core. Vredestein calls the total valve length 60mm measured to the very tip. The length is perfect for most standard rims and also works well with the slightly deeper-sectioned rim used on the Mavic Ksyrium wheels.

Features

49 grams
Smooth valve stem
Removable valve core
Please note: this tube comes with a clear plastic sleeve on the valve stem that needs to be removed for most installations

Loves the abuse and rides super sweet

Salsa Chili Con Crosso - 2012

Salsa Chili Con Crosso - 2012

Rating for this product: 5 January 20, 2012

Been riding this bike and racing cross for the last year riding the Chili Con Crosso. I love to ride this bike and it loves the abuse. The geometry is tight and awesome. I have never had and fork shutter with the tapered fork.

I love the 1x10 setup but switched to a 40T ring for the muddy and hilly races.

2.7 cm BB drop is adequate in compensating geometry for tall tires put not so much so road tires are not comfy.

Wheelset that comes with it is great for training and butter smooth and the bike was surprisingly light considering and rides even lighter.

I have the 2011 version that had crappy wheel skewers that you couldn't get tight enough and a 68mm BB. The salsa skewers and the PF30 should be nice improvements over 2011.

Notes: A 35mm read tire is as big and you will get in the rear, and no braze-ons for fenders.

I don't have any complaints, super ride.

Cutter Carbon Cage

Cutter Carbon Cage

Rating for this product: 4 January 20, 2012

I replaced a different carbon cage with this cutter cage because my old cage decided to toss the bottle off the bike to save weight when I hit a big bump. This cage has yet to let me know. My cage was like 20% heavier than advertived but still light. Retail is a bit high considering you can have a Arundel for about the same price. It looks good and functions well, not much else to say.

That being said Crank Brothers sell a cleat for road shoes, I have used it and it works good, but if you plan on using your bike for road use with road use you are probably best off with a different pedal.

Continental Speed King Cyclocross Tire - Clincher

November 16, 2011

The speed kings use a fairly soft rubber for mud and off road traction at the cost of longevity. I haven't used my all that much on the road maybe a couple hundred miles and the center section is fairly worn. Maybe 25-40%. Fast enough that I swapped out a pair of Small Block Eights for on-road and gravel conditions.

Answer to: "I am between the 566 and the Lightspeed M1(price). This will"

LOOK Cycle 566 SRAM Rival Bike

LOOK Cycle 566 SRAM Rival Bike

August 6, 2011

I love my 566, just raced the state championships today on the bike. While my use is somewhat different than yours I can comment on the fit considering you may have some inflexibility in the back. I have cut down the fork on my bike as low as it can get to get that aero fit. I have significant saddle to bar drop, but when I got the bike the bars were much higher. Considering you can flip the stem to the positive side and keep the fork tube cut high you could hypothetically make it ride like townie bike. Not sure that would look cool but that is just to show there is tons of room to move. The geometry is slacker on the bike so it rides super smooth and soaks up the bumps so nice.

Sizing I can't be sure about I would use the realcylist live help for that. You be either a Small or Medium in my opinion.

That is the amount of float the pedal/cleat combo allows. The 0 degree cleat is like a fixed position where the heal is not allowed to move around freely. The 9 degree allows the most wiggle room. The 4.5 degree seems perfect for me.

Answer to: "Hi- I have been riding Zipp 404s. I wanted to try your Easton"

Easton EC90 SL Wheel - Clincher

Easton EC90 SL Wheel - Clincher

June 6, 2011

I would ask your lbs to be more specific. I haven't heard any problems and lots of guy around here run Easton carbon. I don't have this exact wheelset but do own a set of Easton wheel with the same R4 hubs that are found on every top of the line easton wheel. They have been absolutely flawless over thousands of miles. Some people who lbs don't explain to them or don't read the manual have a problem because the bearing pre-load is set manually and after a few hundred miles or several times on and off you may have to re-set the bearing load. You know because the hub may make a ticking sound, this takes all but 3 seconds to adjust. If you research it the manual bearing pre-load set is great to have especially if you want to dial out the drag.

The spokes used are a sapim. The model I have the sapim c-xram bladed spoke and to be honest me and my brother have both broken spokes. I don't know if is the spoke tension or what but they were rather random spoke breakages.

Selle Italia Flite Kit Carbonio Flow

Selle Italia Flite Kit Carbonio Flow

May 23, 2011

In my opinion those are two very different saddles. The SLR is a flat saddle your site bones site on top of the wings. The flite is a bit wider and is more round; you site more in the saddle than the SLR. Round or flat is personal preference but flexibility is the dominating factor. Less flexible guys usually like flat saddles, but flat saddles are not as good for maneuvering around. The flite has the cutout and the kit carbonio has the carbon rails.

In my opinion a person that is 100kg(220kg) that has problems with spokes yet wants a fast wheels you need to look into a hand built custom wheelset with no less than 28 spokes in the rear and 24 spokes in the front. You are not going to find this with a mass production wheel because they are not designed for you.

I would recommend Enve Composites 45 series clinchers with 28 spokes in the rear, 20 in front. Google the words 'custom wheel builder enve' to find out who can build it for you.

The Tw-6 torques from 10-60 Newton Meter range or 88-530 Inch Pounds and has a 3/8 inch drive.

Most seatposts on carbon frames torque to 5NM, so the TW-5 is best.

I like the pedro's pro torque because it has a wider range (45 - 250 Inch-Pounds) the is better for home mechanics who can't afford both a 1/4 and 3/8 torque wrench.

Superior fit and compression

Sugoi RS Short - Men's

Sugoi RS Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 1, 2011

I switched back to regular shorts from bibs and tried the Pearl Izumi P.R.O., Giordana Tenax, and the Sugoi RS.

The Sugoi RS has come out on top as my favorite and most comfortable short.
- The material is provides superior compression and maintains its shape perfectly.
- The 10 panel cut is extremely anatomical and fits my body perfectly without being too tight in certain areas.
- Chamois is top of the line and padding in concentrated on the sit bones.

The only complaints is sometimes when wet, the material will squeak against the surface of my synthetic saddle cover.

Overall I put Sugoi high on the list of quality brands. Less marketing hype and more real performance.

In 2011 Thule finally made the T2 right

Thule Transport T2 with STL2 Lock - 2 Bike

Rating for this product: 5 March 25, 2011

Pros:
1. Simple and quick load and unload
2. Secure with dedicated cable lock per bike (New feature)
3. Secure with STL2 hitch pin lock
4. No wobble at all using snug tight lock
5. Once bikes are off you can open hatch or tailgate without removing or tilting rack out of the way. It still has the tilt option if the bikes are on.

Cons:
1. Heavy
2. Expensive

I absolutely love this hitch rack. It is easier to user than a roof rack, doesn't require any effort to load, and doesn't touch the frame of your carbon beauty.

With the new integrated cable locks Thule finally made the T2 secure enough for me to purchase.

Thule also fixed another known issue on the T2 by putting a small screw on the bottom to avoid a bike tray to accidently walk off the back of the rack.

I don't know what else to say. If you love your bike this is the rack to have. It so easy my kids can even mount their bike on it themselves.

Sidi Genius 5 Pro Carbon Shoe - Men's

Sidi Genius 5 Pro Carbon Shoe - Men's

March 17, 2011

The Dominator and the Genius share the exact same upper. The difference is the purpose and sole. The Dominator is a mountain bike shoe with a lugged sole for dirt and mud. It support two-hole cleats only so you have to use SPD or other mountain pedals. The genius has a flat sole like any road specific shoe and support only three hole cleats used on road pedals like Look Keo and Shimano SPD-sl. If you plan on riding road primarily go with the Genius and a road pedal. If you intent on riding off road, commute, or ride primarily socially go with the SPD style pedal because they are far easier to walk around in.

Great compression and convienent

2XU Compression Recovery Sock DO NOT USE

2XU Compression Recovery Sock DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 4 February 24, 2011

To start these recovery sock are constructed extremely well. Having a circular knit makes way better that other compression garments because it stretches evenly and holds its compression perfectly; like a ace bandage. Cheaper compression garments without circular knits will get tight in the spots you don't want them to.The sock has different zones of compression to promote the blood flow up and out of the calf. I always felt like after long rides and races I retained a lot of fluid in my lower legs. Wearing this sock after rides or when traveling to and from races has helped my legs feel refresher and recover faster; eliminating the need for ice and elevation.

On the downside these are outright expensive and may not be a good value if you don't feel you would really benefit from the improved circulation.

So nice, fit, finish, style, and more

Uvex FP 3.0 Helmet

Uvex FP 3.0 Helmet

Rating for this product: 5 February 20, 2011

I haven't ever found a local shop that carried Uvex helmets so I no idea how it would fit when I ordered it. The helmet fit much like a Giro with a narrower fit but not quite as narrow as Giro. I currently have a Bell helmet and always found Bell to fit rounder heads well but not mine. The Uvex is adjustable in several ways and I like how the entire basket can be raised and lowered to your head shape. Weigh wise it says 249 grams but I am going to have to weigh mine cause it seems a bit heavier than my Bell.

So what's so great about this helmet is the subjective features.
1. Quiet: I found that wind noise is very low compared to other helmets I own. I didn't even realize this was possible.
2. Straps and pads are all nice and sturdy to handle washing after washing.
3. It looks damn cool, or as cool as you can look in a bike helmet.

One thing I noticed about this helmet that I had to adjust to is I have to do glasses under straps. Faux pa The straps in front come from the middle of the helmet frame so when glasses over straps mode it kept pushing my glasses forward.

SRAM Rival Doubletap Lever Set - 10-Speed

SRAM Rival Doubletap Lever Set - 10-Speed

Rating for this product: 4 February 20, 2011

Have been using the SRAM Rival group for a couple years. The group has performed extremely well and has been impressive. WIth so much trickle down form the Red group its hard to find a better performing group for the money than Rival. I like the cool looks of Red but I like how smart Rival makes be look. One important note, at first the shifting performance was blah, when I swapped out the stock cables with a set of Yokuzuna cables I had an amazing increase in shifting performance. So the stock cables and wires sorta suck. I also wore one right shifter out, it got more and more play in it until it didn't shift anymore. I wouldn't say the shifter is delicate but if you want to be careful how aggressive you are.

High-quality bag construction and pretty quick to remove. This is where the happiness stopped. I had this bag for no more that two weeks then 20 miles into the ride I looked down and noticed the bag was gone. I turned around and retraced my steps; when I found the bag I noticed the clip on the bag side was broken. I had not abused the bag at all. My LBS said I wasn't the first person with the problem and I returned it for a standard strap bag. That was two seasons ago and it is possible the clip has been improved but the picture indicate it hasn't.

Kinetic Road Machine Fluid Trainer

Kinetic Road Machine Fluid Trainer

February 16, 2011

That's easy, don't tighten it so much. :-)

You probably feel you need to over tighten it because there is a little natural play on the bike because the adjustable side of the Kurt trainer is not threaded and therefore has a little wiggle room. I have corrected this two ways. I tried some electrical tape around the threads in the inside of the tightening rod and it worked OK. If you like is really wiggle free put a nut and washer on the inside of both threaded rods. After putting your bike on the trainer thread the nut up tight against the trainer. You will need some extra time and a wrench to remove you bike from the trainer but it will be rock solid.
