One summer, six years old, I was riding my bike as usual and did the unthinkable, I removed the hands from the bars. In that moment I was immortal, unfallable, and sure that I was capable of anything life could ever throw at me. I have been chasing that dragon for the rest of life putting thousands on mile on my bike. Since then, I have managed to solve world hunger, tamed lions, completed emergency brain surgury in a busy lobby, and polished off untold number of beers in one sitting; but still, I marvel for that moment of truth, the moment the hands left the bars for the first time.

LOOK Cycles 566 SRAM Rival Road Bike - 2009

March 11, 2009

Look at those great ergo-carbon levers on the 2009 SRAM Rival and look Mom, no cables hanging out like that Shimano Ultergra. If you haven't read Bicycling magazines review of SRAM Rival find the Feb. issue. They are lighter, better, and priced to destroy all the competition. I can't find any reason why anyone would shell out more money on the Ultegra group.

Litespeed C2 Carbon Frameset

Lightspeed has made a point not enter the weight war by not publishing any weight figures. The top end C1 frame is 1200 grams and uses slightly lighter carbon so I deduct the C2 frame is around 1200 grams also.

Cleaning you chain any other way is a waste of time

Park Tool Cyclone Chain Scrubber - CM-5

Park Tool Cyclone Chain Scrubber - CM-5

Rating for this product: 5 August 25, 2010

I cherish the days when life wasn't so busy and I could spends hours deep cleaning my chain with a combination of brushes and cleaners. Anymore I look to get the job down quick and that is wear the Park Cyclone excels. This chain cleaner gets the job down quick and easy, but it more that adequate because the internals are replaceable and available and it keeps the job almost completely clean.

It uses about 2oz of fluid per cycle and it may take two washes to get the job down, so I recommend low cost degreasers. My favorite is Simple Green, that chain comes out clean, it's not hard on parts and pant and it environmentally conscious.

With this tool you will have clean, efficient and silent drivetrain like the mechanic in your club ride.

Answer to: "Noticed that the only review here emphasized that the Knicker"

Sugoi RS Knicker - Women's

Sugoi RS Knicker - Women's

August 24, 2010

While the UltraAero material is great and seems to handle temperature changes better than most summer short materials it is not insulating and provides no protection from the cold wind either. This is the type of short you wear on cool morning that warm out as the day goes on. You don't need to pack knee or leg warmers. Considering you asked for something to use under 45F, try a full tight or insulated knicker.

My favorites are

- Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Softshell or Pearl Izumi Amfib Tight (For 50 degrees and under, both have windstopper for open road rides, can be purchased without chamois for layering over a short or knicker)

- Sugoi MidZero RC Pro Tight (These are so cozy and comfortable and don't get too hot even as the day warms a bit)

Mavic Zxellium Shoe - Men's

August 21, 2010

I don't think any shoe should make your foot go dead in 24 miles. There are so many factors to your problem and the shoe is only one of them and likely the least of your worries. Do you loosen the straps after the first 5 or 10 miles, your foot will bloat. Read up on cleat position for bike fitting first. Considering an ironman is a hella long ride you might want a professional bike and cleat fit. People may suggest different shoes that may help you but do your best to setup your fit with the current shoe first; you might end up with two pairs of shoe with the same problem.

The Keo cleats work with Keo pedals only, same with the Delta. If your pedals are more than a few years old, and when viewed from the side they look bulky and fat it's probably a Delta pedal. If the pedal is flat and thin (low stack) it's probably Keo. Almost all Keo's are also imprinted with the work Keo somewhere. I really wish there was a better way to tell.

Answer to: "I will be new to cycling and i'm interested in cyclo-cross."

LOOK Cycles 566 Shimano 105 Road Bike

LOOK Cycles 566 Shimano 105 Road Bike

August 4, 2010

Well, one this is for certain, you will want to shop for a cross bike. A cross bike can be riden on the road very easily but a road ride will not have the clearance for cross tires and brake calipers that support a wider tire. Also, most road bikes I wouldn't consider hardy enough for cross use.

On a cyclo-corss bike you just need to swap the tires or wheelset and go. A different wheelset is most desirable because you will probably want to run different gearing on the road but its not required. Also, as you train more on the road you may need to want to consider different gearing in the front also. There are other factors in play such as bottom bracket height and geometry that lead people to buy one cross bike and one road bike but all things considered you want a cross bike if you plan on riding both terrain on one bike.

Maybe. Many calipers will support a 32c tire but you can't inflate the tire until its fitted past the caliper. I can't even fit a 25c past my SRAM calipers. Also something to consider is if there is clearance on the frame and fork for a 32c tire.

Answer to: "So I have been looking for a well priced, versatile trainer and"

Blackburn Tech Fluid Trainer

Blackburn Tech Fluid Trainer

July 27, 2010

The term "Better" is a subjective term. The fluid trainers use different technology to generate the resistance that is much more expensive to manufacturer therefore is costs more.

The question to ask is should I be looking for a magnetic or fluid resistance trainer.

There are a bunch of factors here but the fact is if your focus is building high-end power for competitive riding and anaerobic training you will want a fluid resistance trainer. The fluid resistance offers a progressive resistance curve that help the trainer respond better when doing power intervals without manual adjustments. You can't really ride any faster using fluid resistance that you can on the road. With a fluid trainer you can't just sit up and spin the pedals at low resistance, the higher the speed the higher the resistance.

Now if you are using the trainer for general fitness or for long steady tempo training with various cadence levels the magnetic trainer is probably right for your needs. As magnetic trainers become more expensive they generally include more manual resistance options to simulate climbs and power efforts. Fluid resistance does this automatically.

Pretty good for ride less than 3 hours

Accelerade Hydro Sports Drink

Accelerade Hydro Sports Drink

Rating for this product: 4 July 21, 2010

I used the Accelerade Hydro for the past four month’s consistently and liked it in general but not enough to replace Hammer HEED and CarboRocket.

I liked the protein blend because without a bit of protein on rides over 3 hours I start feel a little anemic. The product fits the bill pretty well in that capacity and I was able to sustain high output for longer using Accelerade than using water alone. I also never cramped using the Accelerade Hydro which I have using other drinks or mixes. The taste is pretty good when cold but degrades pretty fast as it sits hot in the bottle cage. After two hours warm it actually starts to taste sort of sour so not ideal if it can’t be consumed fresh.

Having only 60 calories per serving is great when you are cutting fat but when looking for maximum performance you need about 200 - 250 calories an hour for endurance rides. And if you doubled the amount used in a bottle it just wasn’t right. For this reason accelerade hydro alone isn't enough and you have to pack gels to supplement the fluids.
Overall, this product is pretty good especially for one to two hour efforts but it isn’t enough for a one-stop in ride nutrition.

Answer to: "Are these 440 outside to os? Or wider?"

FSA K-Wing Compact Handlebar

FSA K-Wing Compact Handlebar

July 10, 2010

FSA compact bars are measured from the center of the bar ends. So the bar would be 44cm from the center to center of the bar ends but compact bars are flare outward so the measurement at the bends (traditional measurement) will be shorter than the bar’s advertised size.

SmartWool PhD Cycling Light Mini Sock - Men's

I was always a cotton sock guy. Never really wore a cycling sock or anything in wool because they usually lacked elastic qualities.

I picked these smartwool socks up and I have to concede my cotton smugness. The socks are comfortable, look good, and my feet feel really good. They are like climate control for my feet.

Superior fit and compression

Sugoi RS Short - Men's

Sugoi RS Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 23, 2010

I started wearing bib-shorts a couple years back because it was a fad. Realistically bib shorts were not doing much for me because I have a fairly muscular build and have a butt to hold up my shorts. On top of that bib-shorts can be a little inconvenient if you know what I mean.

I switched back to regular shorts and tried the Pearl Izumi P.R.O., Giordana Tenax, and the Sugoi RS.

The Sugoi RS has come out on top as my favorite and most comfortable short.
- The material is provides superior compression and maintains its shape perfectly.
- The 10 panel cut is extremely anatomical and fits my body perfectly without being too tight in certain areas.
- Chamois is top of the line and padding in concentrated on the sit bones.

The only complaints I have are I believe the 'aero' marketing is a joke; I am not faster because of the material on the short. Also, sometimes when wet the material will squeak against the surface of my synthetic saddle cover.

Giordana FormaRed Carbon Jersey - Short-Sleeve - Men's

June 22, 2010

Elise, Thank for defining what American fit meant, read belly.

While Pearl Izumi fits American sizes better in the chest and shoulders, their P.R.O. and Elite lines carried here on RealCyclist.com are not wait you want either. They are just as slim as an Italian maker you just would order a Large instead or XL.

You need a jersey that indicates a relaxed fit. Jerseys marketed as mountain bike jersey are typically looser in the torso. Try finding something from Twin Six, they are awesome for both road and mountain. Some better selection of jerseys for you can be found on the sister site HucknRoll.com.

Sidi Zephyr Carbon Shoe - Women's

Sidi Zephyr Carbon Shoe - Women's

June 22, 2010

This shoe is compatible with 3-hole road cleats only. These are found on Look, Time, Shimano SPD-sl and other standard road bike specific pedals. The cleats you probably bought that do not work are 2-hole (spd) cleats that are typically used on commuter bikes and mountain bikes.

To use this shoe you may have to buy different pedals such as the Look Keo or Shimano SPD-SL.

If you bought the shoes for spin class and they only have SPD “2-hole cleat” pedals you are going to want a different shoe such as the Sidi Vigo Spin Shoe.

LOOK Cycles 566 SRAM Rival Road Bike

LOOK Cycles 566 SRAM Rival Road Bike

June 17, 2010

In my opinion brand isn't really important anymore, even though the marketers would like you to think so. Get the bike you love and you won't be looking for replacement near as soon. Some brands such as Trek focus on ultra stiff bikes but are void of any personality on the road. Other like this Look 566 and Specialized Roubaix focus on smooth riding and which have a lot of character. Others focus on aerodynamics which are often stiffer and heavier but make up for it at speed. Then others focus on light weight such as Jamis and Scott. To be the happiest pick your price range and decide which level of components you like. Find 3 or 4 bikes in your range that you love; compare them and choose the one you like best. If you are anything like me avoid buying the bike that is the most bang for the buck if you’re already in love with it you probably won’t be. You'll just end up looking for a new bike sooner.

Shimano SH-R086L Cycling Shoe - Men's

June 16, 2010

To answer the first question, the crank bros smart cleat is compatible with this shoe.

Whether it's blasphemy to use the smarty pedal on a road bike depends. If you use the bike for commuting then no way, but in that case you wouldn't want these shoes, you'd want something you could walk around in.

On the other hand using the Smarty on a performance road bike for fast training and/or group rides will get you instantly marked as a Fred by fellow cyclists.

Clew, I have been using this on cool road rides, wet commutes, and off road. It suits off-road riding well in my opinion because the material is durable unlike thin nylon-ish rain coats. It doesn't get snagged with burrs and thorns which is a big deal riding in the mid-west and best of all you can wash the mud off without worrying about damaging the jacket. Other jackets I have had were not the same after a muddy ride this jacket comes out the wash just like new.

Ralph, the first quetion you want to ask yourself is how do I use my bike? If you use it for commuting or getting around town and need a shoe you can walk in off the bike you want a 2-hole cleat shoe and some spd pedals. If you are all about performance, go with a 3-hole spd-sl, look style cleat. Some shoes support both 2 and 3-hole cleats but usually they are not good commuter shoes.

Pedro's Ethik Seat Bag

Pedro's Ethik Seat Bag

Rating for this product: 2 June 4, 2010

I love that this bag can be recycled because eventually it will be in my recycle bin. The problem is it will be in the bin much earlier than any other set bag on the market.I like that this bag is small and you can easily load it up with a tube, CO2 inflator, levers and maybe a few bucks. But on the bike this just looked sloppy, cheap, and out of place. I isn't very durable and I didn't like using it much either. I quickly replaced the bag with another and it has been demoted to occasional rides on my fixed gear.

For the price you really have to want to look green to justify buying this bag.

Makes a great commuter saddle too

Fi'zi:k Zea:K Mountain Bike Saddle - 7mm

Fi'zi:k Zea:K Mountain Bike Saddle - 7mm

Rating for this product: 4 May 24, 2010

This is a real interesting saddle blending the best of cross-country and free-ride seats. Works super to add a little bump protection on a hardtail mountain bikes. Here's how it really works.

The back of the saddle is lightly padded on top of a flexible shell, it is ramped slightly in the back and has a no skid material. This is awesome when you slide to the back of the saddle for seated climbing efforts.

The middle of the saddle is generously padded so you can stay seated longer even during bumpy descents. It has these leg grippers on the side that I questioned at first, but low and behold they are awesome to use for increased control when you are standing during descending and technical sections.

The nose is padded and slopes down slightly. The nose is a little long and I don't find it that useful for my style of riding. The underside of the nose is padded and has a gripper. It works good if you shoulder the bike using the seat which is pretty common on today compact mountain frames, and of course commuting.

On the negative side the saddle is slightly narrow for a mtb seat because you usually are sitting more upright. The padding is nice for technical offroad and I wouldn't trade it, but on the road if you ride it for an hour or more seated it can rub you the wrong way. And the seat is obviously pretty high priced. Overall, I am happy with this saddle and feel it was an good value.

April 5, 2010

I have the older model of the same pump. I have had the same problem especially after I pump a shrader valve. I am usually able to restore function of the presta side by shoving a presta valve as deep as is will go and flipping the lever. I do this two or three times and it all of a sudden starts working again. Sometimes I have to us an older tube off the bike to really get it in there. If that doesn't work you may have to replace the head. I don't think pedros offers replacements, but Planet Bike has generic heads for $6 that are fairly universal and better than what came on your pump.

It's a love affair

LOOK Cycles 566 SRAM Rival Road Bike

Rating for this product: 5 March 25, 2010

I have been riding this bike for over a year now. Overall, I can't imagine how an everyday cyclist or aspiring competitor would be unhappy with this bike. I have tested Look's marketing philosophy on this bike, completing long road races and short crits this year. I have been in love with the bike and groupo from the first day. Knowing I would be racing some on this bike I was worried about comments that this bike's relaxed geometry was not appropriate for competition. I found that to not be a concern at all unless you prefer a very agressive drop. Over the course of the year I acquired a preference for a more aero position and removed most the spacers from the headset. My fitter said I have optimal racing position with the bike. For 2010 Look includes the Askium wheelset instead of the Fulcrum 7. This is an upgrade because the build quality of the Fulcrums was not good out of the box. As with most wheelsets that come with complete bikes replacing even the Askium with a lighter and more aero wheelset may be be well worth the money. I thought a lot about how I would review this bike but thought I would leave it to cycling news for a more impartial view.http://www.cyclingnews.com/reviews/look-566-origin

Top notch for long term endurance

GU Energy Gel - 24 Pack

GU Energy Gel - 24 Pack

Rating for this product: 5 March 17, 2010

The GU is my absolute favorite energy gel for one reason only, Performance!

Control your blood sugar control the bonk monster. GU primary source of carbohydrates is Maltodextrin not sugar. These complex carbs will keep fueling your body long after the sugar buzz of most energy gels and drinks have gone away. Maltodextrin is a bit harder to swallow though and I like to wash it down with water.

There is just enough sugar and caffeine to kick in quick.

The packaging is great too. For endurance events or group races where reaching into your jersey pocket may not be convenient or safe try taping one or two GUs to your top-tube. Just pull the package at an angle and your GU is ready to gulp.

I like the triple-berry but I just tried the new flavor Jet Blackberry. Wow, tasty.

Yeah it stops water dead in its tracks, but can it handle the wind and cold without sweating to death inside. Hell yeah it does! I originally layered this jacket too much and got hot. What I found is it insulates well and I didn’t need dress for a blizzard. I have been riding this jacket comfortable in the following conditions.

38-45 degrees: layered with long sleeve base layer and long sleeve jersey.
45-55 degrees: layered only with long sleeve base.
55-60 degrees: layered with short sleeve base or jersey, arm warmers optional.

I really love this jacket and it looks way better on than I thought it would, the only thing I would like to see is some reflective hits on the back.

Luxurious material

Descente Pro-V Mid Base Layer - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Descente Pro-V Mid Base Layer - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 12, 2010

The material used on this base is super soft and smooth. It comes out of the wash like before you put it in. It fits close to the body and has nice length that will cover your torso. It does an excellent job at pulling the sweat off your body to keep you warm while you are working hard but isn’t insulating or wind resistant. The only drawback I see is that the polyester material tends to hold onto body odor.

It's a better no-show sock

Cutter Road Bike No-Show Sock - 4-Pack

Cutter Road Bike No-Show Sock - 4-Pack

Rating for this product: 4 March 12, 2010

These are pretty great socks. Fit and finish is very good. Two things make this sock better than non-cycling specific equivalents I used in the past. First the top of the upper halve of the sock is extended and flat, without a sewn in seem. This avoids have the top of the shoe rub you raw on the seam after a 3 to 4 hour haul. Second, the top of heal has a bit of material at the top that makes sure the heal stays up and doesn't fall into the shoe. Material is a little funky and is a lint magnet.

Cutter Quickie Skewer Set

Cutter Quickie Skewer Set

March 12, 2010

Generic skewer sets can be considered interchangeable between mountain and road setups. While most MTB rear hubs are 135mm and Road hubs are 130mm, there is enough extra thread length in the skewer for the 5mm difference.

LOOK Cycles Keo 2 Max Road Pedal

LOOK Cycles Keo 2 Max Road Pedal

March 4, 2010

I understand the Look has rectified this issue but a recall wouldn't be issued because it poses no safety concern. All new pedal sets are shipping with a modified rubber seal but many dealers still have inventory of some with stiff seals.

In my experience, Realcyclist is great with returns and exchanges and has sent me exchanges with no cost to me. So if you find yourself with a stiff pedal you won't be stuck with it like you are with ebay or other online retailers.

Capo Modena Arm Warmer

Capo Modena Arm Warmer

February 26, 2010

Brushed fleece arm-warmers such as these are perfect for spring and fall rides. They are also great for mornings because you can roll them down and then take them off easily as the day warms up.

Answer to: "I'm a little confused by the sizing chart. What is the virtual"

De Rosa Avant Road Frameset - Men's

De Rosa Avant Road Frameset - Men's

February 25, 2010

There is not a lot of slope in this frameset. The effective (virtual) top tube on the 58cm Avant is 58.7cm. Combine that with the 60.5cm effective seat tube and you could expect this bike to fit more like a traditional 59cm than a 58cm with just a bit more stand over clearance.

Answer to: "1070 or a 6700? are they too similar to make a difference running"

SRAM Force Cassette OG-1070

SRAM Force Cassette OG-1070

February 24, 2010

For all intents and purposes the 1070 and the 6700 cassettes are very similar. I run SRAM shifters and have a variety of 1070 cassettes. Last fall I bought a Shimano 6700 cassette in 11-28 for hilly rides. In the end I ended up just buying another OG-1070 in 11-28 this year. Things I noticed
a) I change out cassettes often, if I swap a 1070 for another 1070 everything works fine. When I swapped to a 6700 I had to change my derailleur high and low stops, which made this much more time consuming.
b) The 11-28 OG-1070 actually weighed a few grams less than the 6700.
c) Both seemed to shift equally as well. The 6700 actually made my drive train a bit quieter.
