SRAM PG-970 Cassette (9 Speed)

Rebuilding my Touring/commuter bike and running into some questions. I have the 09 novara randonnee, thats seen a hard 3500 sum-odd miles and is in desperate need of help. I am revamping the drivetrain with a Shimano Ultegra FD-6703 Front Derailleur + Shimano Ultegra RD-6700 Rear Derailleur. My question is what size cassette should I get to attain a 9 speed with a faster ratio than what came on the factory setup (12/28)those being the sm and big cogs. I was thinking of your SRAM PG-970 Cassette (9 Speed). I would also like to get a new top ring. original size having 28 teeth. I would like to get a faster size. ?.

SRAM Red Crankset - Compact

Hi. I am 72 and recently re-started cycling after a gift of a Boardman Pro Hybrid road bike. I have recently completed the Glasgow to Edinburgh run and found the bike great on moderate inclines and fantastic on level and downhill, but very difficult to negotiate on steep hills. Here, mountain bikes whizzed passed me, with legs going like whirlwinds at about 7mph while I struggled with considerbale pedal force to keep going at 4mph. My son advised that what is required is a CONSTANT leg force and to avoid heavy pedal forces which sap the enery - now the question...
Can I get a smaller drive cog for the low drive (presently 50/36), say 50/30 or even better a 3 cog set, say 24/38/52??
